Frequently Asked Questions

What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a movement that unites Americans in improving our neighborhoods.  AmeriCorps is not a job, it is a service opportunity.  In large and small communities, AmeriCorps members are taking responsibility, learning valuable skills and fulfilling their pledge to "get things done."

What benefits do AmeriCorps members receive?
For a list of benefits for the AmeriCorps*National Direct program, click here.  For a list of the benefits for the AmeriCorps*VISTA program, click here.

What is Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles?
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles is an organization that is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.  Since 1990, we have built over 180 homes in neighborhoods all across Los Angeles County.  Shelter is a basic human need, and Habitat strives to achieve its goal of eliminating poverty housing and making decent, affordable homes a reality for all families.  Our affiliate headquarters is located in Gardena and our current build sites are located in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Torrance and Watts.

Will I be required to have a car?
Yes.  Given the limitations of public transportation in the greater Los Angeles area, you will be severely limited if you do not have reliable transportation.  Therefore, all members are asked to have a car when they arrive.

Do you currently have AmeriCorps members?
We currently have 13 AmeriCorps*National Direct members and 2 AmeriCorps*VISTA members.  We feel the AmeriCorps program is very valuable to our affiliate and is a major factor in our being one of the top producing affiliates in the Western Region.
