Construction - Individuals

There are many ways to be involved on a Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles construction site as an individual volunteer.

Types of Construction Volunteers:

  • The Occasional Volunteer
Occasional volunteers are on site to help build houses. An Occasional Volunteer may be new to Habitat or a long-time volunteer who schedules their volunteer days at personal convenience. This is your traditional hard-hat wearing, hammer swinging, paint-brush yielding, shovel embracing volunteer who commits to an 8 hour day on our construction sites. No construction experience is necessary because we’ll teach you everything you need to know.

To schedule your work day on a Habitat for Humanity construction
site please complete the following steps:

  1. Attend a Volunteer Orientation (recommended).
  2. Sign-Up Online!
  3. Read the Construction Site Information.
  • The L.A. Regulars
The L.A. Regulars consists of priority-status volunteers committed to building for Habitat one day or more per month, usually on a Saturday. As such, they occupy a position between Occasional Volunteers and Crew Leaders. Members commit to spend a minimum of one day per month working at a build site. They receive priority sign-up privileges, meaning they can schedule their volunteer dates more consistently than Occasional Volunteers. This is a great way to learn to build houses the Habitat way, and to share skills with other volunteers. L.A. Regulars usually start out as Occasional Volunteers and once they realize the rewards they gain from working on a home they commit to volunteering regularly.

  • Crew Leaders
A Crew Leader is a HFH GLA volunteer who regularly assists at the construction sites by supervising small groups of Occasional volunteers in construction tasks. They teach and work directly with sponsors, unskilled volunteers, and homeowners. Potential Crew Leaders do not need to have previous construction experience as training specific to HFH GLA construction practices is provided during a four week training course. In addition, crew leaders learn some HFH GLA construction and leadership skills through on-going job-site training. Crew Leaders commit to volunteering two days per month and to attending the training sessions which are held on Saturdays from 8am-4pm. For more information on the Crew Leader position, click here. You can also contact Lindsay Randall at lrandall@habitatla.org or 310-323-4663, ext. 119 for more information and details on training dates.

  • Rusty Nails
Rusty Nails are a wonderful group of people who volunteer on weekdays, Tuesday through Friday. They are men and women of all ages who happily dedicate regular time to building, but are not interested in working on Saturdays when the site is full of new volunteers. In addition, they often receive specialized construction tasks from the Site Supervisor. These are the volunteers who manage to keep our builds on schedule with their regular service. No previous construction experience is necessary because you will learn a lot on the job. Rusty Nails generally volunteer at the construction sites at least once per week, although most work with us much more often!

  • Professional Volunteers
While we welcome volunteers of all skill levels we are also in need of professional volunteers. If you have any professional skills and are interested in volunteering your time please email volunteers@habitatla.org so we can add you to our list of Professional Volunteers.
